Neighbourhood Legal Services (London & Middlesex) Inc. (NLSLM) is a community based non-profit agency that provides legal services to low income individuals/families in the areas of Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, Canada Pension Plan Disability, Landlord/Tenant Issues, Employment Law, and Criminal Injuries Compensation. NLSLM does this through the provision of summary advice, referral, and representation. Through community development initiatives, law reform initiatives, and public legal education, NLSLM seeks to improve the lives of the most vulnerable living in London and Middlesex County.

NLSLM is one of Ontario's many community legal clinics. We are funded by Legal Aid Ontario and governed by a board of directors drawn from the community.

Job description

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the quality and integrity of legal services delivered by the clinic. The ED will lead a staff of 13 in a unionized environment. The ED will be responsible for the overall management of the clinic, including financial management, communication with our funder, the delivery of services, and operations and personnel management. The ED will provide direct client services as well as senior legal and analytical skills to the work of the clinic.

The ED works to fulfill the vision, mission, and core values of Neighbourhood Legal Services.

Job responsibilities

More specifically, the ED will:

  • oversee the day-to-day operation of the clinic through managing and mentoring staff;
  • proactively manage and collaborate on human resources, financial, administrative, and policy matters related to the effective operation of the clinic;
  • conduct regular job performance evaluations;
  • maintain a working knowledge of all areas of law practised at the clinic
  • develop and implement policies and practices to ensure the delivery of high quality legal services;
  • monitor caseloads, intake, and duty counsel rotations and systemic involvements to ensure appropriate productivity and internal equity;
  • communicate regularly with support staff and caseworkers regarding service standards, policies, and practices to ensure quality and consistency;
  • maintain strong relationships with Legal Aid Ontario and other funders that support the clinic;
  • monitor, evaluate, and report on program performance to the Board, funders, and community stakeholders, including the completion of funding applications;
  • monitor client demand and clinic resources to ensure service delivery and clinic practice areas are responsive to changing legal needs;
  • oversee the efficient gathering and analysis of service statistics;
  • co-ordinate impact advocacy to effect systemic change and ensure the clinic is a dynamic legal organization; and,
  • balance administrative duties with an active caseload.

Job requirements and competencies

NLSLM is seeking an experienced candidate who has a proven record in a senior leadership position, preferably in the non-profit or government sectors. Requirements and qualifications include:

  • The candidate will be a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and an understanding of the needs and challenges faced by low-income and disadvantaged communities
  • Ability to organize, plan, and implement activities appropriate to advance organizational objectives
  • Proven analytical, decision-making, and planning ability
  • Experience and skills relating to program development and reporting, including preparing project proposals and reports for funders, and implementing effective evaluation frameworks
  • Strong change management skills
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Proven record in effective human resources management and working with diverse staff teams
  • Excellent teamwork and team building skills
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution and people management skills
  • Commitment to high ethical standards
  • Experience with community outreach and engagement
  • Extensive experience in program and organization management is an asset
  • Experience working with a volunteer Board of Directors and managing a community legal clinic or non-profit organization is an asset
  • Management experience in a unionized environment is an asset
  • Capacity to work in French an asset

Commensurate with Hay Report principles and relevant experience. Comprehensive benefit package included.
