Articling student position

Peterborough Community Legal Centre

The Peterborough Community Legal Centre, a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario, is seeking an articling student who is interested in making a real difference in the lives of low-income people.

The Legal Centre serves residents of the City and County of Peterborough from its office located in downtown Peterborough. We are a small, hard-working legal clinic with a strong commitment to ensuring that our clients receive access to justice. Our practice includes worker's rights (Employment Insurance, Employment Standards, wrongful dismissal, WSIB), housing law, access to income maintenance programs (such as Ontario Works, Ontario Disability and CPP Disability), and human rights as related to the above.

The articling student, supervised by clinic lawyers, will provide advice and representation to Legal Centre clients and engage in law reform, public legal education and community development activities. The student will be expected to continue the development of the Legal Centre's employment law program. Qualifications for this position include:

  • LL.B or JD degree;
  • Student in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving ability, ability to work independently;
  • Strong background in employment law;
  • Relevant experience and advocacy skills;
  • Advanced computer skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice an asset.

Subject to the funding criteria for this position, the successful candidate must be:

  • under age 30;
  • out of school;
  • a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada;
  • legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations; and
  • not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.

This is a full-time position with a projected salary of $15.58 per hour (35 hour work week) for the 44 week term and a start date of May 22, 2017.
