LAO increases services for domestic violence clients in Dufferin County
Monday, September 28, 2015
Starting in mid-September, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is adding a staff lawyer to its Orangeville office to provide increased services for people experiencing domestic violence in Dufferin County.
The new member to the Orangeville team is experienced in both criminal law and family law and will help to enhance and expand on services that are currently being provided.
With the addition of a staff lawyer with experience in both areas of law, LAO will be able to increase its efforts in supporting individuals facing complex and overlapping criminal and family legal issues – particularly in domestic violence cases. When someone is experiencing domestic abuse, they may often have several different legal needs. Someone dealing with a child custody issue in family court may also be facing criminal charges after attempting to defend themselves against their abuser.
Staff at the Orangeville office provide timely advice to domestic violence client at both the Orangeville courthouse and at the local shelter, Family Transition Place. By expanding its services, LAO will be able to reach more domestic violence victims in Dufferin County so they will know about the legal help that LAO can provide them.
