LAO implements strengthened refugee and immigration panel standards

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

All lawyers wishing to represent legally-aided clients with refugee and immigration matters are now required to demonstrate they meet the new refugee and immigration panel standards by July 17, 2015. LAO will work closely with applicants providing deadline reminders and support to ensure applications are completed on time. Extensions may be granted in exceptional circumstances.

LAO is strengthening the panel standards to ensure clients are able to access high quality legal aid providers. Lawyers will need to meet a new general standard for the Refugee Protection Division and other tribunal matters, and an appellate standard for practice before the courts and the Refugee Appeal Division.

To demonstrate that they meet the new panel standards, all existing panel members must submit a panel standards form and associated documentation. New lawyers wishing to work in refugee law may be granted panel membership with conditions, determined on a case-by-case basis. Refer to the Implementation Guidelines for further information.
