To serve the increasing need for family law services in Halton brought on by the region’s expanding population, the Halton Legal Service Centre in Milton will officially open this fall.
“Given the growing needs of the rapidly enlarging community of Halton, it was thought there was a need to provide comprehensive legal service to family law clients outside of certificate and in-court duty counsel services,” explains Janet Moss, manager, duty counsel Halton.
“Given the growing needs of the rapidly enlarging community of Halton, it was thought there was a need to provide comprehensive legal service to family law clients outside of certificate and in-court duty counsel services.”
The community is invited to an Open House at the Halton Legal Service Centre on Monday, November 3rd from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to mark its formal launch.
The centre has been offering its clients enhanced legal services similar to those available at family law service centres since its ‘soft’ opening in May. Those services include document preparation, summary legal advice, and referrals to lawyers and social service agencies. The centre also supplies support for matters such as separation, child custody and access, and spousal and child support payments.
The staff, which includes a lawyer, legal aid worker and articling student, can also arrange in-court representation up to, but not including, trials for some matters.
Through co-ordinating services with Halton Community Legal Services, the centre is able to provide an even broader range of help to its clients. The centre is also working with Halton Women’s Place where a lawyer currently provides immediate domestic violence services in the evening and quick connection to the family law information centre for urgent cases.
“We will also offer a staff lawyer to assist clients who have more than one legal need because of intersections between criminal law and family law, family and immigration, criminal and immigration, and mental health,” says Moss. “We will work with the clinic to facilitate the provision of poverty law services to their Milton clients.”
The Halton Legal Service Centre’s family law services are available by referral from the family law information centre at the Milton courthouse or through Legal Aid Ontario’s toll-free service line. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
