Legal Aid Ontario is adding 11 hours to certificates for “legacy claim” personal information forms (PIFs), prior to hearings scheduled with the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB). This measure will make it easier for you to continue representing your refugee clients while awaiting a hearing date.
To obtain the certificate authorization for the additional 11 hours, you need to fax your request letter to your local district area office, along with your client’s full name and current address. You do not need to send a notice of hearing.
The district area office will need to verify your client’s ongoing financial eligibility before issuing the authorization. It will do so by checking the Ministry of Community and Social Services database or by advising you and your client to contact LAO’s toll-free line for a financial assessment.
