LAO staff lawyer to work in Brampton and Toronto Superior Courts of Justice
Wednesday, January 22, 2014
An LAO staff counsel will begin attending Brampton’s Superior Court of Justice every second Friday (commencing Feb. 7) and Toronto’s Superior Court of Justice Practice Court every Wednesday (commencing Jan. 29). The LAO lawyer’s participation in these superior courts is part of a pilot project to enhance access to justice for LAO’s clients and to assist the administration of justice.
On the days when an LAO lawyer is in a Superior Court, he or she will support clients by:
- assisting those requiring information and support
- offering legal services to those who are financially eligible and unrepresented.
An LAO lawyer in these courts will support efforts to move matters forward through the judicial system and ensure efficient use of court time by:
- providing services such as legal aid application status updates
- setting out the specific days when he or she will attend the courts – so the courts can plan to deal with matters related to LAO and/or requiring LAO staff lawyer services on those days.
LAO worked closely with, and extends its thanks to, Toronto and Brampton’s Superior Court of Justice judiciary for their support in developing this pilot.
