New online panel lawyer directory coming soon

Monday, January 6, 2014

On Jan. 26, 2014, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is launching a searchable panel lawyer directory on its website to make it easier for clients to find a lawyer.

Clients seeking a lawyer can:

  • type in their address, city and/or postal code — the directory will auto-complete the search once the first few letters are typed.
  • select an area of law for which they require expertise (such as criminal, family, refugee, child protection and others).
  • select a language spoken by the lawyer (via an optional drop-down menu).

Every search will produce a list of ten lawyers who have agreed to be on legal aid referral lists, along with the lawyer’s address and phone number. The result will be randomized to give all panel lawyers an equal chance to appear on the online list. Visitors can refresh or clear the results, or save the list as a PDF.

Alternatively, clients can opt to use the “search for a specific lawyer” feature and type in a lawyer’s name to get that lawyer’s contact information. Again, the page will auto-complete the search once the first few letters are typed.

The online directory will be in the “Getting legal help” section of the LAO website, where clients are most likely to seek this type of information. The new page will address threat risk and privacy impact.

Please note: You do not have to take any action to get your name on this online directory. The online directory will include all lawyers already on legal aid referral lists.
