LAO offers family and refugee services at Rexdale Community Legal Clinic
Monday, May 27, 2013
Toronto – Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) has added four family and refugee claimant/immigration professionals to the two criminal lawyers who already serve this community out of the Rexdale Community Legal Clinic.
“These services respond to a very real local need,” says Jayne Mallin, executive director of the Rexdale Community Legal Clinic. “We have continued to receive large Somali and other newcomer communities, many of whom are experiencing complex and interrelated legal problems, such as immigration, criminal, and family, which we can now address under one roof.”
The clinic is part of the Rexdale Community Hub, a group of not-for-profit organizations that operate out of a two-story red brick former school owned by the city. Since its inception in March 2012, these organizations work hard to deliver integrated services. In addition to the Rexdale Community Legal Clinic, tenants include:
- the Boys & Girls’ Club
- Delta Family Resources
- Dejinta Beesha
- Rexdale Community Health Centre
- Albion Neighbourhood Services
- Toronto Employment and Social Services
- Somali Business Development Agency
- Rexdale Women’s Centre
- Youth Basketball Mentorship Program
- Housing Conflict Clinic
"All our agencies are dealing with clients who need family, immigration and criminal support,” says Jayne. “These additional services – part of a one-year pilot we hope will continue – enable us to provide a holistic approach to their problems.”
