LAO wraps up discretion consultations
Posted on: Monday, May 28, 2012
Representatives from Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) recently visited thirteen cities across Ontario to consult with stakeholders on improvements to the discretion payment process.
From May 7th to 24th, LAO held in-person consultations in Windsor, Brampton, Kenora, Thunder Bay, London, Toronto, Newmarket, Hamilton, Oshawa, Orangeville, Barrie, Ottawa and Sudbury. In total, 220 participants registered to attend. Information and video presentations were made available online for those unable to attend in person.
LAO will use the information and feedback gained through the consultations to revise discretion guidelines in the coming months. Our goal is to streamline payments and reduce administration, enable LAO staff to provide quick, consistent decisions on requests, ensure that approved discretion requests comply with the Legal Aid Services Act, and help ensure fair and effective stewardship of public funds in providing legal services to legal aid clients.
