Certificate acknowledgement dates extended

Posted on: Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Lawyers will soon have more time to acknowledge certificates online. Starting Sunday March 18, LAO is extending the certificate expiry time period from 90 days to 180 days from the date of issuance.

After 180 days, if certificates are still unacknowledged they will automatically expire. A Notice of Expiry will be sent to the client and the case will be closed the following day.

Unacknowledged certificates will still be deemed to have expired in 90 days, as per the regulation in Legal Aid Services Act. However, lawyers will not have to request reactivation in order to acknowledge certificates. This change is expected to greatly reduce the number of expired certificates and subsequent reactivations, saving administrative time for panel lawyers and LAO staff.
