Coming soon! New Legal Aid Online features simplify the certificate acknowledgement and billing process

Posted on: Tuesday, November 29, 2011

As part of Legal Aid Ontario’s (LAO) overall strategy to improve services and to simplify billing for lawyers, two new features are being added to the online solicitor portal, December 5.

One new feature allows lawyers to acknowledge certificates online after receiving a private retainer. This new feature, part of Legal Aid Online’s Certificate Acknowledgement site, will make the acknowledgement process faster and more convenient for panel lawyers.

When a lawyer enters an account on a certificate where they have received a prior private retainer, the amount of the retainer indicated on the online acknowledgement will pre-populate the private retainer field. Lawyers will no longer have to fax or mail their acknowledgements to LAO when there is a private retainer.

Another new portal feature simplifies the billing process for lawyers in cases where criminal charges authorized on multiple certificates are resolved together.

In these cases, lawyers should bill on the certificate that covers the most serious charge as this will result in the highest block fee or hourly tariff maximum. For the remaining charges, lawyers will be able to select an option in the “Plea/Outcome” field, allowing them to indicate that charges were resolved on another certificate.

This new feature will simplify the account billing process for lawyers and LAO and make it easier for lawyers and LAO to manage legal aid certificates. If you require further information, please contact the Lawyer Service Centre at 1-866-979-9934 or 416-979-9934 within the GTA.
