LAO now paying over 98 per cent of lawyers’ accounts within 60 days

As part of a larger commitment to providing high-quality services for panel lawyers, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) has made significant progress in paying lawyer accounts in 60 days or less.
Since May 2010, LAO has succeeded in reducing the number of accounts two months or more past due by more than 90 per cent—a statistic that LAO is continuing to improve on. As of January 14, 2011, over 98 per cent of the 4,698 accounts currently in LAO’s inventory are less than 60 days old. LAO will continue to improve the speed of account payments as we move forward with enhancing lawyer payments services.
LAO processes, on average, close to 600 accounts a day. Approximately 400 are processed automatically through the online billing portal, while 200 require manual review. Accounts reviewed manually include requests for discretionary increases in the amount of hours billed, and accounts submitted more than 18 months after the certificate was issued.
