LAO seminars on domestic violence and its impact on clients June 1 and June 8
Posted on: Friday, May 29/09
LAO is offering free training sessions on domestic violence and its impact on legal aid clients. The seminars are part of LAO's ongoing commitment to helping victims of domestic violence as part of its overall plan to improve client services. In 2008, LAO issued more than 8,000 certificates to clients who disclosed abuse.
The sessions, part of Legal Aid Ontario's Domestic Violence Response Training project, will help legal aid workers heighten their awareness, knowledge and sensitivity around issues surrounding domestic violence cases.
The seminars on June 1 and June 8 are open to the legal community - family law panel members, staff from legal clinics, law students, duty counsel and lawyers who are considering accepting legal aid certificates.
Participants will be provided with:
- Practice tips on issues such as duty to report abuse, cases with unrepresented and/or difficult clients, trauma and how it affects clients
- Updates on recent changes in family law
- Information on local community resources for client referral
- A chance to connect and share challenges and strategies with those working in the area of domestic violence
A third seminar will be held this fall.
