Cases involving domestic violence are complex. Apart from unique legal challenges, such as cases involving parallel immigration and criminal proceedings, there may also be ongoing safety concerns for the victim, their children and those who try to protect them. These cases require a high level of awareness, knowledge and sensitivity on the part of lawyers and their staffs, whether they represent the abuser or the victim.

The session is open to all family law practitioners and duty counsel who work with legally aided clients, as well as lawyers and law students contemplating doing this work. Local practitioners and other experts will participate in the training as well, so don't miss your chance to network. Legal Aid Ontario and the Law Society of Upper Canada will recognize the session as Continuing Legal Education. Lunch will be provided.

Each session will provide:

  • Practice tips on issues such as duty to report abuse, cases with unrepresented and/or difficult clients, trauma and how it affects your clients
  • An update on recent changes in family law
  • Information on local community resources to which you can refer your clients
  • A chance for you to connect and share challenges and strategies with those working in the area of domestic violence
