Response to 'Days numbered for legal service' Toronto Star article
Wednesday, February 20, 2013
LAO released the following statement in response to the recent Toronto Star article, "Days numbered for legal service that offers lifeline to poor, vulnerable."
Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) has a legislated requirement to promote access to justice throughout Ontario for low-income individuals by means of providing consistently high-quality legal aid services in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
LAO is accountable for the entire legal aid system in Ontario and makes decisions based on clients’ needs, access to services and value for taxpayers.
LAO’s Clinic Committee of the Board made the decision not to approve the 2012/13 funding request from West Toronto Community Legal Services (WTCLS), based on issues related to clinic board governance, reporting and financial and human resources management practices.
The WTCLS has submitted a request for LAO’s Clinic Committee of the Board to reconsider that decision.
Funding will continue until a final decision has been made. The community can be assured that regardless of the outcome, there will be no disruption to service for clients.
As the reconsideration process is ongoing, LAO cannot comment further.
