Contact the legal aid plan in the province or territory where the criminal matter is taking place. For example, if you were charged with a crime in Alberta, you need to contact Legal Aid Alberta.

Be sure to tell the representative where (city, province or territory) your matter is taking place. If you are financially eligible, and your legal matter is one that LAO covers, we will send a referral to the legal aid plan in the province or territory where your matter is taking place. The decision to cover your legal matter is up to that province or territorys legal aid plan. If you are covered, they will find you a lawyer in that province who accepts legal aid clients.

No. If you are in Ontario on a student visa, you are not eligible for legal aid. Legal fees are an expense that is paid by you, your parents or guardian during your stay in Canada.

Unfortunately, we do not have arrangements with legal aid plans in other countries. However, if you are financially eligible for legal aid here in Ontario, we can provide you with a letter confirming that information. You can then provide that letter to a legal aid plan in the country where your legal matter is taking place.
