This app permits potential legal aid clients to self-assess for financial eligibility for legal aid certificates. Legal aid certificates are just one of the range of services that Legal Aid Ontario offers for Ontarians.
This app does not collect or store any of your personal data.
Where can I get the Legal Aid Ontario app for my phone?
The Legal Aid Ontario app can be accessed by downloading it through the app store for your device.
If you’re reading this on a different device, open your phone’s app store on your home screen and search “Legal Aid Ontario” through the search box to find and download the app.
Q. What mobile devices does the app support?
The app is currently available for mobile devices running recent versions of Android, iOS and Blackberry 10 operating systems.
Q. What can I do with this app?
The app will help you to determine if you are eligible for one of Legal Aid Ontario’s most popular services – a legal aid certificate – by asking you questions about your financial situation.
If the app determines that you might qualify for certificate services, you will be directed to phone Legal Aid Ontario’s call centre to speak with a telephone representative who will confirm your eligibility by asking you questions about your financial situation, and determine if your legal issue(s) are eligible for this or other services for which you may qualify.
Q. Is the information I enter into the app secure?
Yes. LAO does not collect or retain any information that you enter into the app.
Q. Do I need to install updates?
Yes. It is very important to keep your app up to date and you can do that through your device’s app store. Keeping your app up to date will ensure that any new features or changes to the app, such as new information and new eligibility thresholds become available.
Q. What languages can I use the app in?
The app is available in English and French. You can select your preference after you launch the app.
Q. Do I need to be connected through mobile data or WiFi to use the app?
No. Only the call center current wait time display requires an Internet connection.
Q. How much does the app cost?
Nothing. The app is free to download and use.
Q. Who is the Legal Aid Ontario app for?
The app is for anyone who is interested in seeing whether they qualify financially for a legal aid certificate.
Q. Is the app accessible?
The app was designed to be compliant with the guidelines set out in the AODA. Accessibility features are dependent on built-in mobile device operating system accessibility features. As such, the experience may differ from device to device. If you have any concerns, or would like to request any of the content in a format that is more suitable to you, please contact our technical support team.

You can start by using this app, or by calling our toll-free number at 1-800-668-8258. For more details about legal aid eligibility and how LAO can help, please refer to “getting legal help” on the Legal Aid Ontario website.
Q. Do I have to download/use the app before applying for legal aid?
No, but if you did use the app, mention this and the results you received when you call LAO.
Note that since the app does not store your personal data or responses, you will have to answer similar questions again when you call.
Q. I’m not a resident of Ontario. Can I still use the app?
Yes, but while you might be able to get some useful information from the app, things can get complicated if you don’t live in Ontario. Give us a call at 1-800-668-8258 and we can talk about what services are available to you.
