Community Legal Services is Lakehead University Faculty of Law's Student Legal Aid Clinic (SLASS). Our mandate is to provide excellent legal service to low income clients, as well as an experience based clinical educational program for Lakehead Law students. Under the direct supervision and mentorship of Review Counsel, students provide legal assistance to low income persons in the city and district of Thunder Bay. Our work includes individual case files, community outreach, advocacy projects, public legal education and teaching.

We are seeking an energetic, enthusiastic lawyer with sound judgement, and excellent interpersonal skills, to join the clinic as a Review Counsel. The clinic currently provides legal service in the areas of Criminal Law, Provincial Offences, Tenants Rights, and Civil disputes (Small Claims Court), Wills and Powers of Attorney and Criminal Injury Compensation Board applications. With the addition of a Review Counsel, we are seeking to expand our services to include Labour and Employment law. Some travel within the district will be required. Experience delivering legal services in remote Northern/Indigenous communities is an asset.

A minimum of 5 years' experience in Wrongful Dismissal / Employment standards law is required. The ideal candidate will also have experience in Civil Litigation (small claims). The ability to also supervise students in and Landlord/Tenant matters and the drafting of simple Wills and Powers of Attorney is preferred.

Review Counsel will also be called upon to teach portions of the Clinic Course. To that end, we seek individuals who enjoy being in the classroom and have a passion for teaching.

Reporting to the Clinic Director, the Review Counsel's responsibilities include:

  • Comprehensive and detailed supervision / mentoring of law students in the areas of written and oral advocacy, client management, file management, legal analysis, legal research, legal drafting, legal problem solving, negotiations and professional ethics;
  • Supervision of students in the delivery of satellite services within the district of Thunder Bay including Nipigon, Marathon and Greenstone;
  • Provision of legal services directly to clients when necessary;
  • Development, implementation and supervision of public legal education, community outreach and advocacy projects;
  • Assisting the Director with delivery and evaluation of the Clinic course or other teaching assignments as determined;

Qualifications:

  • JD or LLB degree;
  • Membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada (licensed to practice law in Ontario);
  • Minimum of 6 years' experience as a practicing lawyer including at least 5 years' experience in Employment law;
  • A demonstrated ability in serving low-income clients and persons with disabilities in a respectful and sensitive manner;
  • Demonstrated cultural competencies / experience serving Indigenous persons / familiarity with Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario;
  • Excellent attention to detail and proven time management skills;
  • Interest and experience in areas of social justice and poverty law;
  • Proven ability to supervise and mentor students;
  • Familiarity with Legal Aid Ontario, its mandate and structure.
