Algoma Community Legal Clinic

The Algoma Community Legal Clinic, a community clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario, has been awarded a Law Foundation of Ontario Connecting Articling Fellowship funded through the Law Foundation.

We are seeking an Articling Student to work in Sault Ste Marie for the 2018-2019 articling year for a 10 month period. We serve low income clients particularly in the areas of Landlord/Tenant, Social Assistance, Criminal Injuries Compensation, Canada Pension Plan Disability, and Human Rights. Our work includes individual casework, advice, community outreach, public legal education and law reform.

Under the direction and mentorship of the Director of Legal Services or Clinic Lawyer, the Articling Student will:

  • Undertake casework practiced by the Clinic with a focus on Aboriginal community members
  • Represent clients before tribunals
  • Participate in outreach initiatives including in First Nation Communities in our area
  • Partner with other agencies such as the Human Rights Legal Support Centre to increase the Clinics capacity to meet the legal needs of the Aboriginal community

The successful Applicants will ideally have:

  • An Aboriginal background
  • Experience or courses in provincial or federal human rights
  • Experience with poverty law issues
  • Relevant employment, educational and/or community volunteer experience
  • A demonstrated interest in social justice work and community outreach
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Professional skills and ethics
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
