Throughout the province, low-income Ontarians depend on legal aid to ensure they have access to justice when they need it. Last year, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) assisted over one million people through the community legal clinic system, duty counsel programs, the legal aid certificate program, as well as in-house family and refugee legal services.

LAO offers a range of legal career opportunities for people interested in contributing to this important mandate. Legal positions range from staff lawyer in our criminal, family or refugee law offices, to duty counsel, to ground-breaking policy/research work.

Synopsis of employment benefits for permanent employees

Community of Service

Opportunity to make a difference in the lives of low-income Ontarians by ensuring access to quality legal services.

Salary

$76,000 to $115,000 per annum, depending on year of call.

Direct Deposit

All LAO employees enjoy the convenience of having their biweekly paycheques directly deposited into an account of their choice.

Vacation

17 paid vacation days provided annually with the ability to carry over up to 17 vacation days to the following year.

Pregnancy and Parental Leave Sub Plan

Top-up of Employment Insurance benefits up to 93% of your salary for 32 weeks for combined pregnancy and parental leave benefits. Up to 93% of your salary for 17 weeks for parental leave only.

Sick Leave/Short Term Disability

6 paid sick days per calendar year in the event of illness/injury. For continuous absences due to illness or injury of 5 days to 120 days, will be paid at 100% of salary, with appropriate medical support.

Benefits

Three options are available so that each employee can customize the benefit plan to meet his/her personal needs. Coverage, the level of reimbursement and annual maximums differ according to the option chosen from basic packages to "deluxe" packages.

Health Care Spending Account

From $250 to $1000 deposited into a health care spending account depending on the number of dependents covered by the plan. The health care spending account is fully funded by LAO and may be used to top up existing benefits coverage.

Prescription Drugs

Basic option provides reimbursement of 80% to a yearly maximum of $2500.

Pay Direct Drug Card

Eliminates having to submit paper claims and wait for reimbursement.

Vision Care and Eye Exams

Basic option provides $150 for the purchase of eyeglasses and/or contact lenses every 2 years for you and each of your dependents. There is also coverage up to $50 every 2 years for eye exams.

Hospital Benefit

Semi-private hospital accommodation depending on the benefits package selected.

Private Duty Nursing

$25,000 once every three benefit years

Paramedical Practitioners

From $500 to $1000 annually, combined, based on the benefits package selected for the services of a:

  • Physiotherapist (no annual maximum)
  • Chiropractor
  • Psychologist
  • Osteopath
  • Podiatrist
  • Chiropodist
  • Naturopath
  • Massage Therapist

Basic Life Insurance

A non-taxable benefit equivalent to one times your annual salary paid to your beneficiary in the event of your death. 100% of premiums covered by LAO.

Dental Benefits

From 80% to 100% reimbursement of basic services depending on benefits package selected

Up to 60% reimbursement for major restorative work depending on benefits package selected.

50% orthodontics coverage for dependent children under the age of 19 for those who have opted for the "deluxe" package only.

Optional Life Insurance

The opportunity to purchase additional life insurance at competitive rates for both you and your spouse up to $500,000 of coverage.

Dependent Life Insurance

The opportunity to purchase up to $10,000 of additional life insurance for your spouse and/or your dependent children. The rates are not based on gender, smoking status, age or the number of dependents covered.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment

A non-taxable benefit equivalent to one times your annual salary paid to your beneficiary in the event of your accidental death or provides a payment to you, due to dismemberment in the event of an accident.

Optional Accidental Death & Dismemberment

The opportunity to purchase additional AD&D coverage for yourself and/or your family at up to $500,000 of coverage.

Travel Insurance

Out of province coverage; emergency services.

Pension

Eligible for the LAO pension plan after 12 months of continuous service; pension vested immediately; LAO contributes 9.0% of salary; Employee required contributions from 6.0% to 9.0% and moving to 9.0% January 2019.

Group RRSP

Eligible to make voluntary contributions through payroll and take advantage of the investment options and reduced investment management fees

Group TFSA

Eligible to make voluntary contributions through payroll and take advantage of the investment options and reduced investment management fees

LPIC Dues

Errors and omissions dues covered fully by LAO while in the employ of LAO.

Law Society Fees

Membership fees fully covered by LAO while in the employ of LAO.

Employee and Family Assistance Program

A confidential service that can be accessed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for counselling services from a broad range of professionals including, but not limited to:

  • Smoking cessation programs
  • Alcohol/substance abuse support
  • Marital and/or family counselling
  • Nutrition/weight loss support

Canada Savings Bonds

Training Opportunities

Opportunity to access a wide range of training programmes that encompasses a blend of substantive law and simulation based in criminal, family, and refugee disciplines. These are CPD accredited.
