About Legal Aid Ontario

How is Legal Aid Ontario funded?

Legal Aid Ontario receives the majority of its funding from the Government of Ontario and the Law Foundation of Ontario. The funding it receives from the provincial government includes an allocation of funds that the federal government provides the province under a cost-sharing arrangement.

Provincial sources of funding

The Law Foundation of Ontario provides Legal Aid Ontario with 75 per cent of the interest earned on lawyers' trust fund balances, after the foundation deducts its expenses. These revenues depend largely on the Bank of Canada overnight interest rate and real estate activity levels.
